My mother was Wilma Starks, daughter of J. W. Starks, superintendent of No. 7 coal mine in Kincaid at that time. She was a little sweet on one of the young militiamen guarding grandpa's house in the mine yard. Dad worked during the strike and told me about the miners getting in cars at the end of the shift and swinging cut off pickaxe handles out the windows as they roared out of the gate.
I am coordinator of the One Book, One Harper program at Harper College in Palatine, IL where we are reading the book The Ballad of Trenchmouth Taggart. This book chronicles the coal mining wars in West Virginia in a fictional account of one man's life. One of the events we are having at Harper to tie in with the book is a discussion on strikes, unions and the coal mining community (not specifically West Virginia) I'm working on putting together a slide presentation and wondered if I could use some of the images you've got on your website. Thanks
